PLAY IT SAFE: A Back to School Survival Guide for Parents of Athletes and Musicians

Back to school time is upon us! Is your child feverishly practicing their trombone or flute? (Or pretending they don’t know it’s collecting dust under the bed?) Or are they gearing up for football, baseball and soccer season?

We know that back to school is hectic but making time to visit your pediatric dentist now can prevent some big headaches once the school year is in full swing. Below are our quick tips for parents of rising sports stars and mini-musicians:

For Athletes: Mouth guards! Contact sport or not, these little devices are super important. While you can get these over the counter at sporting goods stores, there are a few reasons to visit your pediatric dentist instead:

Custom fit: We can ensure that the mouth guard your child or teen is wearing is custom to them, fits securely and is keeping their teeth safe. Additionally, if your child is in the middle of orthodontic treatment, you’re going to want to make sure that mouth guard is up to date with their treatment – no backward movement on that straightened smile!

Comfort: Those over the counter mouth guards are big! They can be cumbersome… and don’t get us started talking about tongue comfort! A custom fitted mouth guard from our office will give your kid’s tongue plenty of space and never make them feel like they’re choking on foam or rubber.

Options: There are several different options of mouth guards out there. Depending on what sport and your child’s specific needs, our team can help you choose the right one.

For Musicians: Budding violinists will have less of an issue here but wind and brass players need to take their dental health needs into account ahead of back-to-school.

Tell us! It’s important to tell us if your child plays an instrument with his or her mouth. We can help make sure their orthodontic appliance – whether Invisalign, traditional or lingual braces – doesn’t get in the way.

Bring your mouthpiece. Help us help you! Have your child bring their instrument (for the small ones) or just the mouthpiece (no need to bring your whole tuba to the office unless you want to perform… which we’d love, by the way!) and we can see exactly what needs to be accommodated at their braces fitting.

Proper playing technique. Make sure your child speaks to their music teacher or instructor about proper technique once their orthodontic treatment has started. Their teacher can guide them to make sure the music and tooth movement aren’t interfering with one other.

By taking a few small precautions and scheduling a visit to Humble Kids Dentistry you can avoid the dreaded call from school requesting you to drop everything and pick up your kiddo because of an orthodontic or dental emergency. Let us help set your mind at ease and keep your child’s teeth safe this back to school season.

Invisalign First – Now Available For Kids as Young as Six!

The same impressive Invisalign technology adapted for children who have mixed adult and juvenile teeth, aged 6 to 10-years-old.

At Humble Kids Dentistry we highly recommend having your child seen by an experienced orthodontist around their 7th birthday. Why so soon? Early orthodontic treatment isn’t for everyone but in specific cases, a child comes to us with moderate to severe orthodontic issues that just can’t wait for later treatment. This is referred to as Phase 1 treatment or early interceptive treatment and is performed before all of a child’s permanent teeth have erupted, a situation called early mixed dentition (a mixture of primary/baby and permanent teeth.)

As a parent, we know it’s hard to imagine your little one in braces at such an early age. That’s why we’re excited to tell you that Invisalign is now an option for our younger patients in need of Phase 1 treatment!

Children ages 6-10 can now be treated by Invisalign First for issues typically solved via arch expanders, or partial metal braces. The new Invisalign First clear aligners are designed specifically to address a broad range of younger patients’ problems. Early treatment can prevent more severe problems or alignment issues that could get worse later on while providing a foundation for permanent teeth to begin to erupt.

Invisalign First uses the same comfortable clear aligner and scanning technology as adult and teen Invisalign treatment. At the same time, Invisalign First clear aligners expand on key innovations and have been specifically designed for growing patients with new and unique features and functionality. The Invisalign First aligners were created exclusively for younger patients with shorter tooth crowns and what the company calls its Eruption Compensation feature that makes it possible to treat erupting or changing dentition. In other words, Invisalign First can accommodate baby teeth falling out and permanent tooth growing in all while adjusting your child’s teeth according to the plan Dr. Amir Davoody or Dr. Rena Mehr has laid out.

A quick note on that: When it comes to clear aligners, it’s not just the aligner doing the work, seeing a qualified, certified orthodontist for an in-person evaluation and supervision of your child’s treatment is key. There is more to creating a healthy, beautiful smile than moving the visible portions of your teeth. If not done correctly any dental work can lead to potentially irreversible and expensive damage such as tooth and gum loss, changed bites, and other issues. If you’re considering any form of smile straightening we urge you to see a doctor in person.

Back to Invisalign First! The technology has the same benefits Invisalign has always offered: no food restrictions, no change in brushing or cleaning, and less chance of emergency visits. We know your child’s health is precious – this technology was extensively tested prior to release and Dr. Davoody & Dr. Mehr have both found it to be a great tool for early orthodontic treatment.

How is Invisalign like Harry Potter’s magic?

How is Invisalign like Harry Potter’s magic?

At Humble Kids Dentistry  we believe in the power of magic (big Harry Potter fans), but sometimes science is so advanced that it becomes almost indistinguishable from wizardry. Invisalign is powered by the kind of tech that can be considered magical. Get ready to step into the fantastic world of Invisalign!

Cloak your teeth with invisibility

In the beginning of his story, the young wizard is gifted a magic cloak. It’s a powerful bit of magic that allows the wearer to become completely invisible while wearing it. The fabric of the cloth is woven from special enchanted material for witches and wizards to render themselves unseeable. Much like the magic cloak, Invisalign appliances are made with a material that makes them virtually invisible to the naked eye. The aligners are produced from a patented flexible plastic material that was invented exclusively for Invisalign by biomechanical engineers, who we consider a special class of wizards.

Wands that scan your teeth

A standard instrument of every magic-user is the wand. It allows the bearer to focus on magic often with a beam of powerful light that can produce wondrous things. Our doctor works with the Invisalign scanner much like a wizard does a wand. During the Invisalign digital scanning process, our orthodontists wield a handheld device that takes a high resolution, interactive image of your teeth in 3D, snapping 6,000 images per second!

Spells and magic maps for your future smile

In one adventure, the wizards are bestowed with a magic map that tells them how to achieve their goal and avoid any pitfalls. After scanning your mouth, our doctor will use a magic spell (aka powerful computer software) to create a map for your treatment plan. Every step is plotted using multiple aligners that gently (and invisibly!) guide your teeth until they produce a perfect smile: Novos Risus! No worrying about any missteps along the way.

A potion for almost every ailment

The study of magic potions is the stock and trade of every budding wizard, seeking out ways to address any situations they may encounter and always tinkering with the formula to make it better. Invisalign has a very similar way of producing results. Over the decades of use, Invisalign technology has improved so that it can treat many cases including crowded teeth, overbites, underbites, crossbites, gap teeth, open bites and generally straighten teeth. Tinkering with the technology in the future will allow Invisalign to resolve even more problems.

Ex nihilo

The Invisalign aligners are produced from a powerful 3D scanner that seems to create the appliances out of thin air. There is no hocus pocus here though. A fleet of high-tech devices are employed to produce each and every custom-made aligner that is a perfect fit for your mouth. The technology that backs the Invisalign system isn’t magic, it just seems like it!

Meet our head wizards

If it’s smile magic you want, you have to see the right wizard. You wouldn’t go to Professor Flitwick to learn Transfiguration and you wouldn’t want Professor Binns teaching you Quidditch. Since Madam Pomfrey isn’t readily available, for the straight smile of your dreams, you want to see the team at Humble Kids Dentistry. Each doctor has extensive experience using Invisalign to straighten young wizards and witches teeth.

Don’t Order Your Kids’ Orthodontic Treatment Online Before Reading This

Humble Kids Dentistry

Today, with the click of a button you can do almost anything: Order shoes. Get a ride across town. Watch your favorite Hollywood movie. It seems like every day there’s a newer and easier way to do almost everything. We’ve been programmed to accept that anything can be ordered online and delivered right to your front door. However, at Humble Kids Dentistry there is one thing that we believe has no easy replacement: dental and orthodontic treatment. There is no match for a trained, experienced professional when it comes to your child’s oral health.

The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) agrees. They recently issued a Consumer Alert listing key questions to ask about direct-to-consumer orthodontic companies. You can download a print-friendly version here.

The issue is that many direct-to-consumer companies do not involve the in-person evaluation and/or in-person supervision of your child’s treatment we provide at Humble Kids Dentistry, which is important because there is more to a healthy, beautiful smile than you might think. If not done correctly any dental work can lead to potentially irreversible and expensive damage such as tooth and gum loss, changed bites, and other issues.

The Top 10 Questions To Ask

The AAO advises that when researching oral treatment (including treatment models from direct-to-consumer companies like SmileDirectClub, Candid Co., Smilelove, SnapCorrect, Orthly, etc), you should consider many key questions, some of which include:

  1. As part of your treatment, are comprehensive diagnostic records like x-rays taken before your treatment?
  2. As part of your treatment fee, do you receive any in-person visits to a dentist’s or orthodontist’s office during your treatment?
  3. Is only one treatment type offered (such as invisible aligners or a certain appliance)?
  4. If a dentist or orthodontist is involved with your treatment, do you know the name of the dentist or orthodontist who will be specifically involved with your case (for example, is it available on the company’s website or elsewhere)?
  5. What are the possible risks (financial, health, etc.) associated with your orthodontic treatment?
  6. Who is responsible for detecting any issues that may occur during your orthodontic treatment? Is it you? If it is a doctor not associated with your treatment, who pays for those check-ups?
  7. If a doctor is involved with your orthodontic treatment, how can you contact him or her over the course of your treatment? How can you contact him or her if an emergency arises?
  8. If an emergency arises, does the company have a dentist or orthodontist in your area that you can see in-person? If not, who would cover the costs associated with seeing a dentist or orthodontist in your area?
  9. If you are injured or have another dispute involving your orthodontic treatment, how is it handled (litigation, arbitration, etc.) and what rights do you have?
  10. Does the treatment model comply with the dental laws in your state? To check your state’s dental laws, click https://www.aaoinfo.org/state-laws-and-regulations. Information for your state dental board can be found at https://www.aaoinfo.org/aao/state-dental-board-info.

Where You Receive Your Health Care Is A Very Important Personal Decision

Remember that dental treatment is not a product or device – it is a professional, medical service. Before making any decision about your child’s treatment, consider doing some research and coming in for an appointment to discuss personalized treatment options.
